Gitxsan Health Society Receives Accreditation with Commendation Award!!
Gitxsan Health Society Board is very pleased and proud to announce that Gitxsan Health Society has been awarded Accreditation with Commendation. Gitxsan Health Society went through the Qmentum Accreditation process with Accreditation Canada in May 2015. Accreditation Canada has been helping organizations improve health care quality and patient safety for more than 55 years. It is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits health organizations such as ours in Canada and around the world. It focuses on quality and safety throughout all aspects of an organization`s services—from governance and leadership to direct care and infrastructure—to the benefit of patients, clients, residents, staff and volunteers. We met 551 of the 570 Required Organizational Standards that define what is expected and essential practices that an organization must have in place to enhance patient safety and minimize risks. There are four sets of standards at the core of the Qmentum program:
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Medication Management
Gitxsan Health Society received it’s Primer Award of Accreditation in May 2013. We had two years to prepare for the full Qmentum Accreditation. The Board and Staff went through a lot of work to prepare for the Surveyors. They did the following work:
1. The Board and Staff went through self-assessment on Governance, Health & Wellness, Infection Prevention & Control, Medication Management and Mental Health Services to see what areas of the 570 Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) we needed to work on.
2. The Board and staff reviewed the policies and procedures. New policies were created and revised when necessary.
The Accreditation Team Surveyors were here on May 24, 25, 26 & 27, 2015 at the Kispiox Health Centre, Gitanmaax Health Centre, Sik-e-dakh Health Centre and our PCAP/FAST office. They met with the Board of Directors, staff, clients and community partners to look at supporting documented evidence of practice in the following areas of GHS:
- Quality Improvement Plan,
- Falls Prevention Strategy,
- Ethical Framework,
- Risk & Hazards Assessment
- Emergency Preparedness Plan
- Annual Reports
- Personnel Records (Credentials, evaluations, etc.)
- Communication Plan
- Infection and Prevention
- Medication management
- Fire Safety
- Governance – Policies & Procedures
- Physical Environment – medical equipment and devices, facility & vehicle maintenance
- Financial management
- Client Flow
- Strategic Plans
We received notification on June 8, 2015 from Christopher Dean, Chair, and Accreditation Decision Committee that we were Accredited with Commendation. The second top honor given for Accreditation. He mentioned in his letter, “This is a milestone to be celebrated and we congratulate you and your team for your commitment to safe high quality health services”.
The surveyors told our Board and Managers at the debriefing meeting that it was quite astonishing for our organization to reach the level we attained with the first attempt.
